2010 Chevrolet Camaro Outsells Mustang In June

It's the first of July and that means that sales numbers are starting to be tallied for the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and 2010 Ford Mustang for the month of June, and it doesn't look good for the Blue Oval. Initial reports indicate that Chevy sold 9,320 Camaros this past month, while Ford only managed to move 7,632 Mustangs off the lot. The other big Detroit muscle car, the 2009 Dodge Challenger, finished in a distant third with only 1,369 units sold.

So what does this mean for Ford? And is Chevy somehow viable once again? Well, the numbers are a bit skewed. Due to the fiscal and infrastructure problems that General Motors has been going through, delivery of the 2010 Camaro has been delayed, leading to a built up demand for the car. The huge jump in Camaro sales this past month was similar to the initial Mustang demand bubble that was spread out over two months or so. Also, Chevy reportedly has 10,000 back orders for the Camaro to fill, so they'll probably stay either at the top or neck and neck with the Mustang for the next couple months before the demand lowers and sales normalize.

While the numbers give an explanation, that should not, by any means, take away from Chevy's accomplishment. And what makes it all the more surprising is the relative lack of trim levels in the Camaro. The car is offered in only two options, the V6-power RS and the V8 SS. The Mustang, on the other hand, has the regular model, the GT, the GT500, and convertible variants for each level. So, kudos to GM, but the victory seems a bit hollow because all the money from those sales (plus a whole lot more) will have to be spent on legal fees for getting through bankruptcy proceedings.
